Speaker+++  Kevin Hoover +++Why Him?

Kevin is an American from the state of Indiana. He has lived in China for 20 years and is fluent in Chinese. He has worked as an English, Music, and Business teacher in multiple cities across China, including Chengdu, Xian, Shanghai, Hangzhou, and Shenzhen. In addition to teaching, Kevin frequently performs jazz music with large and small musical groups.

Introduction to Jazz Music

Main Contents

In this English corner we will be learning about the history of jazz music, spanning the 20th century, studying major genres including Blues, Swing, Bebop, Post Bop, and Modern Jazz. We will discuss the major innovators from different periods and instruments, and we will listen to and discuss several musical examples. Most importantly, we will discuss the language of Jazz improvisation, which like English or Chinese, is based on set vocabulary, grammar and form. I will also open up the discussion to give students a chance to share their favorite musical styles, musicians, and other related topics of interest.
